Homeowners insurance for Texas homes
Protect your house, your belongings and your liability with a policy that fits how Texas weather actually behaves. We compare options from multiple carriers and explain the differences in plain English.
What a homeowners policy typically covers
Most Texas homeowners policies are built from the same core parts. How much each part pays, and what it excludes, is where policies differ.
Dwelling
Pays to repair or rebuild the structure of your home after a covered loss such as fire, wind or hail. We help you set a limit based on estimated rebuilding cost, which can differ from your purchase price or market value.
Other structures
Detached garages, fences, sheds and similar structures are usually covered at a percentage of your dwelling limit. If you have a large shop or outbuilding, it is worth checking whether that percentage is enough.
Personal property
Furniture, clothing, electronics and other belongings. Replacement-cost coverage generally pays what it costs to buy new items, while actual cash value subtracts depreciation, so the difference can be significant after a claim.
Loss of use
Helps with reasonable additional living costs, such as a rental or hotel, if a covered loss makes your home unlivable while it is repaired. Policies set limits on how much and for how long.
Personal liability
Helps protect you if someone is injured on your property or you accidentally damage someone else’s property, including legal defense costs. Many households choose higher limits or add an umbrella policy.
Medical payments to others
Pays smaller medical bills for guests injured at your home regardless of fault, which can resolve minor incidents quickly without a liability claim.
Texas considerations: hail, wind, water and flood
Hail and wind are among the most common causes of home insurance claims in Texas, and many policies handle them with a separate deductible. That deductible is often a percentage of your dwelling limit rather than a flat dollar amount, so a 1% or 2% wind/hail deductible on a higher-value home can be several thousand dollars. When we compare quotes, we show you the deductible structure on each one so you can weigh a lower premium against what you would pay out of pocket after a storm.
Roof age and material also matter. Some carriers settle older roofs on an actual cash value basis or offer different terms for impact-resistant shingles, so two quotes with similar prices can respond very differently to the same hailstorm. We point those differences out before you choose.
Standard homeowners policies generally exclude flood, including rising water from heavy rain, and coverage for water backup from drains or sewers is usually an optional add-on. Flood insurance is available separately through the National Flood Insurance Program and private carriers, and NFIP policies typically have a 30-day waiting period before coverage begins, so it is best not to wait until a storm is in the forecast.
Along parts of the Texas coast, some insurers exclude windstorm and hail, and coverage may come from the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) or another wind policy alongside your homeowners policy. If you own coastal property, we can help you understand how the pieces fit together.
Common add-ons to ask about
Water backup
Covers damage when water backs up through drains or a sump pump fails. It is typically excluded unless added, and the limit is often modest, so we will show you the options available.
Scheduled valuables
Jewelry, firearms, art and collectibles often have low sub-limits on a standard policy. Scheduling them individually can broaden coverage and reduce or remove the deductible for those items.
Extended or guaranteed replacement cost
Adds a cushion above your dwelling limit if rebuilding costs rise after a widespread storm, when labor and materials can be in short supply.

Why work with Prout Insurance Agency
Choice, not a single company
As an independent agency we are appointed with multiple insurance companies. That lets us compare coverage and price side by side instead of fitting you into one company’s products, and re-shop your policy if a renewal stops making sense.
Plain-English advice
We explain deductibles, exclusions and optional coverages before you buy, so there are fewer surprises later. You get a recommendation and the reasons behind it, and the final choice is always yours.
An agent who stays with you
When you add a driver, buy a new home or need help with a claim, you call the same Austin-based agency that set up your policy. We serve clients across Texas by phone, email and video.
“Dawn, Brittany, and Jeff have been wonderful to work with! I now have all of my policies with them including home, rentals, and auto because the service and value has been extraordinary.”
