Hail and your Texas insurance
How home and auto policies typically respond to hail, and what to review before the next storm season.
How homeowners policies typically handle hail
Most Texas homeowners policies cover hail damage, but many apply a separate wind/hail deductible. That deductible is often a percentage of your dwelling limit rather than a flat dollar amount, so on a 2% deductible the amount you pay out of pocket rises with the value of the home.
Roof terms matter just as much. Some carriers pay older roofs on an actual cash value basis, which subtracts depreciation, while others offer replacement cost. Some also offer different terms for impact-resistant roofing. Two quotes with similar premiums can respond very differently to the same storm, so we show you the deductible and roof settlement terms side by side.
Before hail season
A few steps now can make a claim easier later.
Know your deductible
Check your declarations page for a separate wind/hail deductible and calculate what it means in dollars for your home.
Document your property
Recent photos or video of your roof, siding, vehicles and belongings help show the condition before a storm.
Review roof coverage
Ask whether your roof is covered at replacement cost or actual cash value, and whether any roof-related endorsements apply.
Park smart
When storms are forecast, garage or cover vehicles if you can. Damage to vehicles is generally a comprehensive claim on your auto policy.
After a hailstorm
Make sure everyone is safe, then photograph damage to the home and vehicles. Make reasonable temporary repairs, such as covering a damaged roof, to prevent further damage, and keep receipts.
Report the claim to your insurance company using the claims number on your policy or carrier app, and feel free to call us if you have questions about the process. Be cautious with contractors who go door to door after storms; get written estimates and check references before signing anything.
For vehicles, hail damage is typically covered under comprehensive, not collision or liability. If you carry liability only, hail damage to your own car usually is not covered.
Review your hail coverage
We can compare deductible structures and roof terms from multiple carriers so you know what to expect before the next storm.

Why work with Prout Insurance Agency
Choice, not a single company
As an independent agency we are appointed with multiple insurance companies. That lets us compare coverage and price side by side instead of fitting you into one company’s products, and re-shop your policy if a renewal stops making sense.
Plain-English advice
We explain deductibles, exclusions and optional coverages before you buy, so there are fewer surprises later. You get a recommendation and the reasons behind it, and the final choice is always yours.
An agent who stays with you
When you add a driver, buy a new home or need help with a claim, you call the same Austin-based agency that set up your policy. We serve clients across Texas by phone, email and video.
