Adding a teen driver in Texas

A new driver is one of the biggest changes to a household’s auto policy. Here is what to review, and how comparing carriers can help.

When to call us

Let us know when your teen gets a learner license and again before they start driving on their own. Carriers have different rules for when and how a permitted or newly licensed driver must be listed, so it is best to confirm with your agent rather than assume.

Texas uses a graduated driver license (GDL) program. Teens generally hold a learner license for at least six months before a provisional license, and provisional license holders under 18 may not carry more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member, may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. except for work, school or emergencies, and may not use any wireless communication device while driving, including hands-free. Requirements can change, so check the Texas Department of Public Safety for current rules.

What to review

Liability limits

A new driver adds risk to the household. Many families choose liability limits above the state minimum and consider a personal umbrella policy.

Vehicle assignment

Which car the teen drives most can affect the premium. We review how drivers and vehicles are listed so the policy is accurate.

Discounts some carriers offer

Some carriers offer good-student, driver-training or away-at-school discounts. Availability and eligibility vary by carrier.

Comparing carriers

Carriers price young drivers very differently, which is where shopping several companies at once can help.

Helping your teen drive safely

Practice in a variety of conditions, including rain, night driving and highways, and agree on household rules about phones and passengers. Make sure your teen knows what to do after an accident: check for injuries, call 911 if needed, exchange information, take photos and call you.

Why work with Prout Insurance Agency

Choice, not a single company

As an independent agency we are appointed with multiple insurance companies. That lets us compare coverage and price side by side instead of fitting you into one company’s products, and re-shop your policy if a renewal stops making sense.

Plain-English advice

We explain deductibles, exclusions and optional coverages before you buy, so there are fewer surprises later. You get a recommendation and the reasons behind it, and the final choice is always yours.

An agent who stays with you

When you add a driver, buy a new home or need help with a claim, you call the same Austin-based agency that set up your policy. We serve clients across Texas by phone, email and video.
